College Tips
Entering College in the Fall? 5 Tips for Students with ADHD:
1. Know the support services your college offers. It's
much better to have introduced yourself to the key people in your
college's Support Services Department ahead of time so that when
you actually do need them you can get help right away. Help typically
comes in a variety of forms, including help with: writing; completing
assignments; organizing work load; managing academic schedules
and social life; and more.
2. Enlist the services of a coach the summer before you begin
school to prepare yourself to get a good start. It is easy
to fall behind in college and not be able to catch up. Low and
borderline grades made during the freshman year can make achieving
a high grade point average by senior year very challenging. Remember
- college isn't high school! Everything you do in college sets
the stage for your success in future life.
3. Keep your coach for the first few months of your freshman
year to ensure you get the support you need during the transition,
or longer if needed. This will provide you with the good beginning
that is so important to a successful experience.
4. Take a reading improvement/speed reading course before you
begin in the fall and/or hire a writing coach to prepare you
for the demands of your basic studies courses. Reading and writing
are skill areas where many students get into trouble unless they
are properly prepared. Often the extra time needed for reading
and writing assignments is what causes students to fall behind
in other courses, feel overwhelmed, and get caught in a downward
spiral.
5. Establish a routine to balance academics with social demands
right away. College is not just about studying and learning
your subjects, but is also a time for growing, exploring, and
having fun with your peers. It is essential for you to develop
the right habits from the beginning that can keep you on track
when social pressures and distractions threaten to derail you.
