4 Success Strategies for Overcoming Procrastination

February 22nd, 2010 by admin

1) Understand that what you procrastinate about is something you worry about.

What you fear – you procrastinate about. Contrary to common belief, procrastination is not simply about your ADHD or your aversion to taking action.

2) Find the fear that is causing you to procrastinate.

What is the underlying fear of going to the doctor, doing your taxes, making the call, doing the application, having the conversation, finishing the task, going on the date? Having trouble uncovering it? Dig deeper until you do. Notice that no matter what you come up with, it will in some way reflect fear of succeeding, fear of failing, or fear of knowing something you don’t want to know. You’d much rather avoid it.

3) Talk it out with someone and get conscious of what is at the heart of your avoidance.

What is the story you tell yourself about it and how is that story keeping you stuck?

What are you sacrificing by not doing the thing you procrastinate about?

What will be possible for you – what will you have – if you stop procrastinating about it?

4) Find a strategy that will allow you to take action right away – or let it go.

Remember that if you can’t find a way to take action and yet you won’t let it go, you are giving what you are procrastinating about permission to continue to drain your vitality and self-confidence. Continuing this kind of behavior inevitably leads to undesirable consequences in your life as well as stripping you of power and self-worth.

Use these 4 step success strategies with all of your procrastination issues and you will have true freedom from any procrastination you choose to end now and in the future!
